BOLD decisions - Farrow and Ball Brinjal Bathroom

I was sick in bed with the flu last winter with a house full of construction workers, which meant I basically had to lie there and listen to their bantering all day long. Two guys were doing the framing on the wall outside our bathroom, which was the first project we did and so was completely done when the rest of the downstairs ripped down to the studs. Their voices carried upstairs, "I mean, I don't think I would pick that color, but it does look kind of cool." Thanks buddy.

A small room like a bathroom is the perfect place to make bold design decisions. I think restaurants have figured that out, and are trying to outdo each other to make ever more photo worthy powder rooms. When Nick and I lived in Mill Valley we had a small half bath that we painted in Farrow and Ball's Arsenic (a bright minty green color) and covered in photos. It was the strangest little room ever and my favorite in the house. For our main bathroom in our new house in Woodacre we wanted to push all the boundaries, which it turned out was just warming us up for the rest of the house.

We knew we wanted our floors to look old and well worn, like centuries of Romans in lace up sandals had tromped through on their way back from the dusty gladiator pits. We picked marble tile, laid it out in a herringbone and used a dark sand colored grout. All of the fixtures are brushed gold from Kohler, and the deep compact soaking tub was inspired by our contractor who lived in Japan for quite some time. He made the cedar slat wood floor for our shower as well.

But what's up with that color? My dear friend who used to be a house painter had always obsessed over this color and got me thinking hard about it: Brinjal from Farrow and Ball. It's like an incredibly rich and dark eggplant skin, with a luxurious depth to it. I almost chickened out once and went with something totally benign, but luckily pulled myself out of it. I mean, what the hell, it's just paint! Granted, it will take ten coats to paint over this color, but why worry about the future now? I'm just going to go ahead and enjoy the heck out of my damn purple bathroom. And if you are passing through town and your bladder is screaming at you, you are welcome to come enjoy it as well.

Mating Dance
May 11, 2020

April 1st and it is the 23rd anniversary of my mother’s death. Usually I go walk the beach, to the place where we scattered her ashes and where she spent her last years, but it’s 2020 and the beaches are closed so instead I go for a walk around the block. In my seventh month of pregnancy now and my feet have started to ache from the extra weight, so the walk starts out slowly, gingerly. I conjure her here, in step beside me - Suzanne Segal, born on Friday the 13th and died on April Fool’s Day. Was that her ridiculous way of encouraging us to see some of the humor, the lightness of life? Those deep dimples and that shrieking laugh are with me as much today as they were decades ago.

My mom and I got off the plane in Albuquerque and headed for the white Isuzu Trooper we kept parked at the airport. After our first few visits to New Mexico, when my mom had properly fallen in love with the landscape and started buying property – all sagebrush and pink dirt – she decided we needed our own car there. This one was properly beat up enough to fit in, as I learned after my eyes had adjusted from the bombastic wealth of the Bay Area to this perennially poor state. But the colors! Even on the license plates! The flamboyant yellow, red and turquoise delighted me, set as they were against the glow of the high desert. I suppose we both were in love with this new frontier.

Peeking through the Back Door
December 15, 2019

I have always felt most at home in restaurant kitchens. No matter how glossy the paint or how shiny the brass door handle on the imposing front door to the dining room, there is always a dinged up, unmarked back door that leads to the real heart of the beast. It took a few weeks into my first cooking job at The Olema Inn to get used to the complete lack of glamour of it all. Only now do I see how the paucity of it helped to form our psyches, ordained us cooks with the chips on our shoulders and the swagger in our steps. We’re here to do the real work. We don’t need no fancy door.
